Johnson 55EL78S 55hp Type IV Carbs
Currently both carbs are fixed jets,
low speed and high speed. No med range
jet. Is it possible to make the idle
speed jets adjustable without replacing
the carbs?

Smitty

Idles good in neutral, but not in gear. If I speed the idle up in gear it runs away in neutral.
Idles way too fast with the ears on. It just seems to need a little tweaking. Carbs are clean with good compression. New plugs.

Smitty

You need to be doing this in the water...You don't have the proper back pressure out of the water, to mess with the idle.

I know that this was done in the water. Not with ears.

Smitty

Sounds like one of the butterflies is cracked a bit at idle. Make sure both are opening at the same time and fully closing at idle.

Yes about 2 weeks ago. But it is an old engine that I bought so I was going to do it again this weekend.

Smitty
