Removing Lower Unit

I was trying to remove the lower unit on my 2000 Johnson 115hp OceanPro today when I hit a road block. I'm using the Seloc manual and it says to pull the pin on the shift rod linkage and free the shift rod from the shift linkage. Well after a little exploration I found the cotter pin and pulled it, however for the life of me could not figure out how the rod and linkage get disconected. I came back in the house and was thumbing through the exploded pictures and it looks like I'm supposed to pull the pin (which is near the center down real low in the front of the engine but slightly to the starboard side) and pull the shaft out from the port side. Am I on the right track?

Re: Removing Lower Unit

hello
it should be a clevis pin on the stbd side just below the bottom stbd carb, remove the pin and push the shaft inward. I find its easier to remove the shift cable and rod. but that is just me.
when it realeses the lever will flop freely.
good luck and keep posting

Re: Removing Lower Unit

I must be completely lost. I see the rod and pin. I've pulled the clevis pin (which I incorrectly called a cotter pin last time) but the rod does not move it goes into the lever assembly which connects it to the rod that goes down the to lower unit. I noticed a bolt on the lever assembly and loosen that as well, but nothing. However even if the upper rod is disconnected from the lever assembly, there is no way that lever is going to fit down the hole through the exhaust housing if I start dropping the lower unit. I see no way to get the lower rod disconnected from the lever either. The Seloc manual is no help it just says to pull the pin and free the rod - easier said than done! Help. Thanks in advance.

Octavian....disconnect the shift cable like rodbolt suggested. It'll be easier to work with. With the pin out, shift the lever toward the back of the engine and push towards the port side of the engine. No need to undo that little bolt under there. The shift rod will pull out with the lower unit. There are large rubber bushings around it for this purpose.

By the way....welcome to iboats!!

One other "trick" I have used is to remove the midsection cowling which gives you a lot more room to see and work with the shift linkage hardware. The port side only takes a few bolts to remove. Leave the STBD side alone where the cables and stuff go in. If you need to adjust the linkage after reattaching the lower unit, this will be a big timesaver.

Just to add a bit to the good advice you've already gotten, The block you see under the lower carb area that couples the lower unit shift rod to the 90 degree shift arm ,separates in two halves around the shift rod.To get it separated ,you need to thrust in on the shift arm after disconnecting the shift cable clevis from it and pulling the hitch pin that runs through it.May be easier to see coupler if the controls were shifted into reverse.

Re: Removing Lower Unit

Woohoo, I got it. Disconnecting the arm and taking the side shirt off were a big help. I could actually see in there and figure out how it worked. Once that happened it was just a matter of time. Thanks everyone - now it's off to the parts store for a water pump.
