Glad to find this place. I have a question about my new find. First let me tell you that I was running a almost like new 1965 5hp Evinrude Angler on my little V Bottom 10 ft boat. I got a Johnson 6hp a few days ago for my boat. Its a 1996 J6REDS that still has some of the sticker on the prop. Like new too. Johnson has the 8hp with the same specs as mine, and I was wondering since its just 2hp if it would be maybe just a carb change or jetting change without having to replace the reed valve assembly or exhaust. Also the 8hp runs 5000rpm to 6000 and mine is 4500rpm to 5500. So maybe a timing adjustment would give 500rpm. The boat is rated for a 7.5 way back in 1965. I now have R and N AND drive. The old one you needed to be pointed the right way before you fired it up. Have ran both in the barrel and there is more torque from this one so far. Just wandering if it was simple or not. 2HP will make a difference on my little bitty boat. Well that would be 3 total I guess. And yes, I will get me a bigger boat one day. LOL Thanks for any advise. I read back about 5 pages before I joined up and there is another guy with a Angler just like mine that was leaking some. Small world.

Welcome to iboats Rusty. The newer 6hp will have more power,speed, and possibly dependability than the older 5's. Don't worry about making a 6hp an 8hp or a 9.9 a 15. If you want a bigger engine you are better off getting a bigger engine. When you get a bigger boat get a bigger engine with it or for it. Enjoy the 6hp. It'll will be a great engine for you.

Hi Rusty,<br /> The mid 1980s 6hp Johnrude was basically the early 1980s 7.5hp only now rated at the propeller rather than the powerhead. The 8hp of the same year was actually a fair amount different as it has a different crankcase intake casting, 8-reeds per cylinder vs. 6 reeds, and a larger carb (actually the 9.9hp carb). It would be quite an operation to turn a 6hp into an 8hp, not impossible, but not really financially feasible unless you had a blown up 8hp kicking around with the neededparts.<br />- Scott

O.K. I found that in 1981 they changed the way that rate them, so that 96 6hp will have alot more power than my 65 5hp. Going to the lake today to try it out. I just wish I knew how many hours it has, so I would know its brokin in. The foot oil has been changed, so maybe that was the 20 hour service.

Also I assume I dont need to run 93 octane? Seems I read to use reg. 87 instead. A friend is going to the lake with me today that has a 98' 90hp evinrude and he only runs 93. If the 87 is going to burn as clean seems there is no need for higher. The ones that have been around outboards for awhile say 87.

87 is fine. This 6hp 2000 manual I have sitting next to me here tells me I can run it on 67 minimum. Use TC-W3 rated oil.<br />Your friend is wasting his money; in fact running high octane gas can cause problems and deposits in outboards. Generally speaking, marine engines are low compression and don't demand or want high octane gas.<br />I think you'll find that 6hp is a strong puller compared to your 5hp.

Man that thing made a big difference. We got to looking at it when we got back and the butterfly wasnt opening all the way. It has a little screw behind the airbox on a plastic lever that we ran in some to get it to open fully. It didnt seem to want to turn up all the way. So now it should be even better. Thought we were going to have trouble at first though. Like the main jet was clogging up. Finally just unhooked the fuel line and ran it out of gas and it was fine after that. Carb must of had junk in it. Ran it a good 5 or 6 hrs. 3/4 of 6 gal. Thanks for the advise fellows.

Go ahead and take the carb apart and clean it good. You won't be too happy if you end up with a problem on the water later. Doesn't take any time at all really and you will have more confidence in the engine.
