I have 70HP Johnson that needs lower unit replaced for its been in water not trimmed for many years and metal is very thin and just terrible shape. I have removed all bolts (6 - total), and removed bolt from shift linkage (even cut through it since I could see it and get to it to be sure its not the problem). Anyhow, unit is loose and can be wiggled back and forth, nothing can be holding it on but main shaft. I can put it in forward, neutral, reverse and wiggle it all day long, but its not coming off. Has anyone ever heard of this problem. I understand that main shaft just slides into splines and unit should just drop off at this point. However not the case for me. Let me know if anything I should do or try. Motor runs good, but I must get lower unit replaced.

I suspect the splines of the lower unit have a death grip on the crankshaft splines, and it may not be possible to separate them.

DHP

Thanks so much for your reply..I have been very very aggressive trying to force it.... I have now concluded that your suspicion is right. It's not going anywhere!! Thanks again.. DH

Doug....there is something ya' might try.....

Put the lower unit in gear. Have a helper hold the flywheel so it don't move. The flywheel always rotates clockwise. Turn the lower unit counter clockwise. You may have to hold the prop so it don't move. Wiggle it back and forth. Sometimes the splines get notches in them and sorta lock together. What we are trying to do is unlock them. After working it, maybe put a large screwdriver between the lower unit and midsection and pry a little.

May work.....may not. Keep us posted.....thanks.
