I have an old Johnson 3 hp outboard motor. I'm not a collector or anything, I just want to find out more about it because I may sell it at a later time. What year etc. Ball park fiqure what it would be worth etc etc. Here is the info on the motor;<br />The small metal tag on the side says;<br />Johnson Motors Waukegan, Ill. USA<br />Mod. JW-10<br />Ser#993336<br /><br />It is a 3 HP. That light green color. The decal on the side of the cowling is mostly missing but I can still see the "3" and a few letters .<br />I actually ran the motor on a small 14 ft. boat abaout 1974 and that was the last time it was run, but I bet it will run with a little cleaning up. Waiting for answer please.

It dates from '52-'54, if it's a runner then according to The Old Outboard Book it's worth anything from $40-$200 according to condition, top price representing a totally original motor, complete and in good running order.<br />At the end of the day though, the price you get is down to who wants it and how badly!<br />I have 3 of them now, a good original from 1959, needing a couple of minor replacement parts and which cost me £30 (US$55), and two 90% complete but non-running donor motors for which I paid £25 (US$45) the pair.<br />They are common enough here in England, and the US must be littered with the things, so I'd think it would only be an exceptional example that would fetch the full $200, so don't plan on retiring on the proceeds!<br />Nice little motors and very easy to get parts for, I use mine quite a lot.

Hi, Pete.<br /><br />Welcome to iboats. <br /><br />Ditto to what Petrolhead says.<br /><br />The Johnny JW series, and the models that succeeded it into the 1980s, were one of the truly great outboard designs. I have had a couple and no engine in that power range that I have ever seen comes close to it in smooth operation and durability.<br /><br />The fuel mix should be 24:1, unleaded regular gas and TC-W3 certified outboard oil.<br /><br />Spark plugs should be Champion (only) J6C (which replaced the original J6J) gapped at .030" for all-round use or .040" for extended trolling or low speed operation.<br /><br />Set the points at .020".<br /><br />Happy boating.
