I have a 1975 Johnson 115 (115ETL75E) that apparently uses what has been called a "rare" two outlet water pump housing. I can't seem to find the housing anywhere.

Is there a retrofit available...or do I just reuse the old housing and hope for the best? I have the service manual for this engine, but can't find any specs for the water pump housing.

I understand that there is a lot of flex in the impeller blades, and I understand the displacement/centrifugal nature of the pump...but since I don't know how thick the walls are supposed to be...or how wide the opening is supposed to be, I don't really know how to tell if the housing is okay to reuse or not.

$0.01 for your thoughts,
Joe

Joe....is there two water tubes from the engine for each outlet? I seem to recall something similar but one of what would be an outlet was plugged off. If there is only one water tube, the kit you want is PN 438597. This kit has a newer housing with a SS impeller cup.

Keep us posted.....thanks.

If the housing is worn, it needs to be replaced. Otherwise it's fine to reuse it. What does it look like? Is it all scratched up?

As far as I can tell, the OMC part number for the water pump kit (impeller, housing and gaskets) is 439140. Looks like Sierra doesn't carry it, but GLM has it on its new products list. I can't say I have ever had trouble getting them from my local dealer. If iBoats doesn't have it, try www.maxrules.com.

OBJ, sorry about the post collision. You do need the two tubes on that motor - that's the way the cooling system works.

I dont know whats so "rare" about the pump. That what was produced on the V4's thru 1976 and the 20" 1977 model 85 and 115's. The 1977 140 and 25" 85/115's used the single tube design.

Its just a standard pump -- shouldnt be that big of a deal.

OBJ - It definitely has two tubes.

Ledgefinder - GLM does carry the 439140 kit, but it is w/o the housing. The maxrules link doesn't seem to work.

Dhadley - This pump was used for 73 through 76 and partially in 77. None of the places I have looked carry it for 73 to 76. If I look at the 77 and up they actually have a note on some sites that they do NOT carry the "rare two outlet housing".

DHPMARINE - I could not find anything from the numbers you listed.

Everyone - I did some more searching with the 439140 number and found a place called Mastertech that lists a kit that is about $60 more than the other kits ($94)...but no picture and no description as to whether it comes with the housing.

I have not taken the lower unit off yet, as I was hoping to have all the parts available before hand. If the housing is going to be that much more, I might just get one of the kits without the housing, but with all the seals and the impeller and bottom plate. It is available here on iBoats for $33.65. I guess I will just do a visual on the housing and hope for the best...and if I get into it and the housing is dead, then I will order the other kits and have a spare impeller kit on hand.

Thank you all for the info and advice...I will probably be back for more :)

This dual-tube pump may not be "rare" but it sure is "prime." None of the aftermarket outfits sell the housing. OMC dealers sell kit 439140 which does include the housing w/liners, seals, etc. Best price I can find on the net is from UsaveMarine.com; currently $78.95 + shipping.

GLM specifically says that their kit 12253 does not include the housing.

Sierra sells repair kit 18-3384, which includes the impeller, the lower plate, the driveshaft seals, and minor hardware. This kit is OK if your housing isn't damaged.

The only thing that would make the housing "rare" is the fact that the original aluminum housing is obsolete. You don't want one of those anyway. 439140 is the complete water pump kit including a new plastic housing and stainless liners. You have to get it from a dealer or somebody selling Original Equipment parts. Fits 1973-77.

Re: 1975 Johnson 115 rare water pump housing

Hello,

I just replaced my waterpump on my 1974 115 and it was indeed part number 439140. The cost from my local dealer was $105.00 after taxes but it was the complete kit for the 2 tube waterpump. My motor still had the original aluminum waterpump housing on it so I figured the expense was worth the peace of mind. If you're looking to replace the whole unit...439140 is the one.
