hello I wanted to know if in order to transform a motor johnson 9,9hp in 15hp (year 1987) I am sufficient to change single the carburetor, or if it is better to change also to the drainage (stock-pot) and the head.
thanks, Andrea

Re: transformation johnson 9,9 HP

Hi Andrea,
The easiest way to transform a 9.9 into a 15 is to sell the 9.9 and buy a 15. With the '87 there are more changes than simply swapping a carb. In the used market, the motors tend to have fairly similar values, so doing a trade-in or selling to buy shouldn't be a problem....
- Scott

Scott thanks but from mine you leave here (in Italy) is not therefore easy, then they have said to me that the 9,9 are practically the same motor depotenziato regarding the 15 and I would have found a good carburetor used. But I do not know if it is obligatory to change to the drainage (stock-pot) for having a 15 HP

formi,
The upgrade issue was covered in this post:
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=026842;p=1#000004

I have done the upgrade on a few of these engines, and completely agree with Chinewalker on the cost issue of converting one of these engines, unless you have access to the parts really cheap or used. Unless you need the power at the top end I wouldn't go through the trouble of doing it. The 9.9 is pretty much as strong as the 15 for the first 2/3 of the throttle, and has a nicer idle (lower and far smoother).

Snow.

thanks snow now I have the ideas po a clearer (not a lot) however if I have not understood badly, considering that the motor is a 1987 I must replace also the stock-pot (the drainage) beyond that to the carburetor. You correct to me if mistake. You I ask why I make po a hard work with the English language translate the post that you have advised to read to me.
Thanks to you in advance payment if you will correct to me if I have understood badly!

I'm afraid I can't help with formi's question, but it might be helpful to readers to know that 'stock-pot' is a BabelFish-ism for Italian 'exhaust' (marmitta).
To us, a stock-pot is something you cook soup in. :D

Formi,
Check with the dealer for a difference of part numbers for the reeds and related parts, and exhaust tube for your model year. That will give you your answer.

Cheers,
Snow

Oh boy! This truly is international. You can see how wars start, can't you!
Hi Formi,
Non parle Italiano.
I'm not too far from you geographically (Malta), but language-wise, it's a different ball game. Try these posts and sites - they are really helpful:

Horsepower Upgrade.
http://www.pugetsoundanglers.org/Fishing Info/Johnson 9.9_15.htm.

There is one thing I've found out while following the same path as you. European Evinrude/Johnson engines did not follow the year-on-year model changes of their American counterparts, so if you've got a Clymer or Seloc manual, read it with caution. If yours is a pre-84 engine, it could have the same exhaust tube set-up as the 15hp model. (This is worth noting - there was a period when the tubes were the same, even though the part numbers were different! Stranger things have happened at sea.)

So follow the experience of the lads on this forum, but be prepared to find that a few things might be different. I'm doing my engine right now - if I come across anything worth noting, I'll post it.

Ciao.
Stillfishing.
