50hp powerhead swap?

i have a 1972 50hp evinrude bad lower unit<br />friend has a 1980 50hp evinrude with a frozen powerhead, but all else is good.<br /><br />can i take the 72 powerhead and put it on the 1980 midsection?

Mikey.....bolt pattern should be the same. Just make sure the driveshaft splines are the same and you can get the manual shift components to bolt up to the 72 powerhead. Hard to tell just from the parts breakdown.

There is one thing you will run into. The base of the early powerhead has a "jog" in it on one side. The late model block is straight on both sides. You will need to do some welding to give the base gasket something to seal on. Without it exhaust will get under the cowling and the motor wont run right.<br /><br />We've made the swap with a late block to an early mid section but never tried it early block to late mid section. Look at the bottom of the block you want to use and the adaptor plate from the 1980 motor. You'll see what has to be done.<br /><br />Good luck!
