My Tach won't work. It does move the needle to zero on the dial when the motor is powered up, but it just sits there while we ride around on our 1984 Checkmate w/ 1984 Johnson 140HP OB. I know nothing about the Tach but do know electronics. HELP

Re: Tach will not read

Welcome!

The first thing is to check the rectifier. The tach reads from it and most times we find that to be the problem.

If thats OK then look at the wiring. Since the needle resets we can assume the purple and black wires are OK but the grey wire may not be making it all the way back to the terminal board on the motor.

If all this checks out, it may just be a bad tach. I'd bet you'll find the rectifier bad.

Good luck!
