I have a 1987 Evinrude 70hp - I installed a voltmeter and noticed that when the engine is running I am getting way up around 18 volts!

I immediately suspected a regulator problem but I was told there are no regulators on these outboards and the batteries just charge at that voltage and one should always make sure the electrolyte is on he level.

I don't have any battery problems at the moment but I am worried about an impending problem feeding a 12v battery 18 volts

Re: Not regulated at all?

there is a regulator mounted beside power pack
try disconnecting the purple wire (this turns reg. off) start moter and read voltage if still high bad volt meter if voltage reads around 12 reconnect purple wire if voltage goes back up to 18 check all grounds if wires are ok replace regulator
