I was running across the lake at 3/4 to full throttle with a heavy load (about 8 people) in the boat. Motor was running well at 4,000 to 4,500 rpm. Then rpm began to fall with no missing or sputtering of the motor, and eventually there was no power. Engine smelled like something was burning, and there was smoke coming from under the cover. After a tow home and letting it rest for a few days, it started right up, but I could not get rpm above about 3,000 rpm with full throttle and soon there appeared to be smoke coming from under the cover again. When cover is removed there is no sign of anything burning, but there is a smell of something burning. While it starts up from cold condition, when hot is is difficult to start.

Visually inspect stator for oozing gook. Do an electrical test on it and I'll bet she's smoked.<br />Good Luck
