Gear Case FLush

Good morning. I just acquired a 1977 Evinrude 85hp V4. I drained the gear case and no signs of water or metal shavings, but the oil was pretty dark and thick- looks like it has not been changed in a while!

Would it be a good idea to flush the gear case before filling with fresh lube, and if so, what would I use to flush it with? My neighbor suggested gasoline, but I don't think that sounds like a good plan!

Thanks
Chris

If you flush it, make sure the unit is setting level so that all the solvent drains out. I would think fuel oil would be alright. Just get it all out so that you don't thin out the lube.

I can't imagine gas being a good idea. I would just pump a lot of gear oil through it, then change it again after a few runs.

I have flushed mine with motor oil. It's cheaper than gear lube. Just make sure you let it drain well before refilling with gear lube.

ATF = automatic transmission fluid? Really? That will be easy enough! Thanks!
