If I pump the primer and petrol flows out the air intake of the carb,is that a sign the needle & seat needs replacing ?Are there any other signs it needs replacing when under normal running (would it cause misfires etc ?)

I'd get a carb rebuild kit (genuine OMC with float), they are cheap enough and will probably resolve all your problems, if not it's an easy way of eliminating the carb as the source of the trouble. Does that model have a fuel pump?

Not sure.I think it has the diaphragm type fuel pick-up that runs on the side of the cylinder.

I think the prime suspect has to be the float needle and/or seat , does your carb have a replaceable valve seat?<br />If that's not it then I think it would have to be the float itself, either adjust or replace it.
