I just put this motor on my boat, it starts fine runs through fwd and rev fine with mufs on, I put it in the water and as soon as I put it in gear the motor bogs down and dies. I always have to choke to get it re started no matter how long it runs. I tried to idle it up a bit with no luck on leaving the dock.

Welcome!!

The first thing to do is take compression. Lets make sure we have a healthy motor first.

Sounds like the carbs need a good bath. Not a shower, a bath. Let 'em soak. Its not unusual for an outboard to idle OK out of the water with no exhaust backpressure but not in the water if the carbs need attention.

Lets start with that so we know we have a good base to work from.

OK, thanks for the advice. I took compression readings, they are 125, 123, 125. I also checked the timing but could not get a load on the motor. at idle in a water tank the timing was 5deg. Im going to try the carbs now and will see how that works. By the way this thing has a 131/4 x 17 prop on it, the same as the 71 100HP I took off. engine is on a 17.5 ft glasstron runabout.
