hello all.. I have a 1985 235hp evinrude that runs good but with one problem. To start it i have to take it out of gear and gas it up very little and it starts right up. To leave the boat ramp i have to quickly take the throttle and bring it past neutral and put it in reverse fast if i dont it stalls out. If im out and i come back in i can't put it in neutral because it will just stall out. For some reason i cant put this motor from forward through neutral to reverse with out it stalling. The only way i can do that is if i take it from forward and jam it into reverse keeping the rpms up a little...I WAS TOLD that this was evinrude hi output motor and they where hard to keep a idle new ..if anyone can help me ....thanks
Sounds similar to some of the issues I was having with my 84 235 crossflow last summer. Not sure if these suggestions will help but it helped my situation.#1 check timing If you need an easy way to test this let me know. Dont want to make post too long. if you already know the simple trick to check timing.#1a Ensure that the carb linkage is correct with advanvce cam (Sync and Linc)(Check this by ensuring that the roller on the carbs is just touching the advance lever at the start mark)#2 Check idle speed in neutral, should be about 950 rpms after motor is warm.#3 check plugs, and plug wires (if old replaceI dont use the champion plugs. Very wet if I idle very long. Have had better luck with Bosch Plantium plugs Part #WR9FP. These are auto plugs so they are not the noise interfering type plug. It is a hotter plug But I have had great success with them. Plugs always dry even after idleing for long periods with motor in gear. Less smoke as well. Bonus they cost less than the Champs as wellIf you try a pair definately read them. Should not have a problem as long as your motor is jetted and propped correctly.#4 check temp of motor after it has run a few minutes in neutral. (Should be around 140 deg at the T-stats)If not replace t-stat assemblys.#5 Check recirc check valves on intake manifold. These are small brass fittings threaded into intake manifold. There are six of them. Disconnect small tubing one at a time and try to blow through them with your mouth NOT compressed air (Or it will damage them). If you can blow thorough any of them replace all of them. The recirc check valves prevent fuel from puddling up behind carbs. It pulls excess fuel from intake mainfold. Bad recircs will also prevent motor from taking off very quickly. tends to stall out when you punch it.#6 check the the two exh holes just below motor cowling. Stock diameter is very small. By enlarging the outer hole only (NOT outer hole and tuner)to approx 1/2" dia hole it will allow motor to idle beter without major exh noise.#7 Ensure jetting is correct for your motor, load and altitude.Sounds like a lot but I bought a boat with an old tired 235 and was still able to pull up a slalom skiier at an altitude of 5700 ft above sea level.Great motor as long as you keep it tuned!!Rebuilt motor this past fall, and barely got it broken in before winter hit. Cant wait to try it out!!!!Good luck and I hope this helpsCrossflow 235P.S. Check out blmarine.com the owner is Very sharp with the crossflow motors. Helped me a ton!!
