Hello
I have a 1993 johnson faststrike 175 that will not idle under a load, it will idle in nuetral, when you put it in gear it sometimes will idle for a bit then coughs and dies also when i start to take off it will often die. once it is above a idle it will run and pull nicely. I had the carbs taken off and cleaned, didnt make any difference.
i am at 4200 ft , was at lake michigan which is like 500 ft and it ran better.
its a real bummer in no wake zones

need some help if you can! Thanks

Hi MWilly, Welcome to iboats!

You need to check your compression. Same thing was happening to me and it turns out I need to rebuild my motor. Don't get discouraged, That may not be the case for you. But a comppression check will at least tell you where to start. A compression check is easy to do. Buy, rent, or borrow one (a screw in type is the best). Search this forum for how to do a compression check and report back the numbers. Then the experts in here can start to help.

I'm just a cadet myself but there are a great many experts in here that can give you the knowledge you need to solve the problem.

Coughing/sneezing is a sign of lean running, which can fry cylinders. Trash in carbs, air leak into fuel system, crankcase aitr leak, etc. are typical causes.

Re: 93 johnson faststrike 175 coughing at idle

The early years of the Faststrikes had black intake manifold gaskets that would swell and distort, allowing an air leak into one or more cylinders. The new improved gaskets are brown colored.

Also make sure the thermostats are warming up the motor enough. Use a temp gun or thermo melt sticks to be sure both cylinder heads are running near 140 degrees at idle.

Champion QL78YC plugs, gapped at .030", are mandatory.

Sometimes sticking rings allow compression leakage and poor idle. If you have not done so recently, run one or two cans of Engine Tuner thru the motor, following the directions on the can.

Thank you
I will look at the gaskets and also could you tell where is a good place for parts for this motor, OEM or aftermarket?
