What color and consistancy is Premium blend or type C oils?

Hi 66. It's very thin like Power steering fluid. Clear, off white or very pale yellow color. Turns white and opaque when emulsified with water. Hope this helps.

Thanks,Drowned Rat.I just drained out some golden syrup with a little white cloudiness to it.I hope changing it will solve my shifting problems on this 1965 40hp Johnson.

Yeah, those L/U's don't like water. If the oil was really thick, it can clog the hydraulic pump too. You might want to try cleaning the L/U by running ATF in it for a minute or two first. Good luck.

What hydraulic pump? No such thing in an electric shift.

jimmbo. He has a '65 40hp. Hydro-electric no? Pump is in the L/U bullet. Please correct me if I'm wrong 66.

That's what I mean, he has an Electric shift not a Hydro-electric. Two completely different designs

hi tomed01. If it's a 1978 model, it's not a hydro-electric drive. Check the model year again.

Tomed01, The only 60hp hydro-electric gearcase motors were built for the 1970 and '71 model years.

Roger I know its a johnson 60 hp hydro electric ive got it on a 69 v156 glastron problem im having is mounting bracket for engine was changed out it says 73 or 78 couldnt make out but its not right is there an engine data plate on engine itself cant seem to find it?. but on engine cover and shifter it say hydro electric.

The engine cover and shifter both say electramatic.Model#RKL27A.ATF stands for automatic transmission fluid right? Which type is best old type F or dextron?

I have a water hose adapter for my lower unit. How long can I run the engine without any damage?

If your just using it to flush out the lower unit, then the best is whichever is cheaper. Do not use it as a replacement for Type C/Premium! The water hose adapter - is it a muffs style one or one that fits on the inlet behind the prop? If it's a muffs style, do not use it as it will not supply nearly enough water. If it is the proper one, then you can use it for hours. But never, ever rev the engine without a load on the propeller. Good luck!

No it's not a muff style. It has a regular female inlet.It inserts into the lower unit to replace a cover plate with 3 screws which it matches.Please tell me this puts a load on the propeller,because I reved it pretty high tryng to get it to go into gear.By the way it still won't go into foward or reverse.

how would adding water even possibly put a load on the engine? Check to see if the electro magnets(coils) have continuity. A good coil will have 8 ohms resistance, zero means a short while infinite means open circut. Check to see if shift switch in the control box works. If everyting electrical checks out the case has to come apart.

Whoa!I'm gonna some directions on just where these coils are located and what they look like.This is my 1st outboard,and I would appreciate a little patience.I never said it had a hydraulic pump.Drowned Rat said that.

I know there is no oil pump in this case. There is a forward gear and a reverse gear, attached to each is what looks lika a large spring. It rotates with the gear. Immediatly in front of/behind the gear and nested inside the big spring is a hub, which is splined to the propshaft. Again, either in front of or behind the hubs is the coil(electromagnet. When the coil is energized it pulls the free end of the spring towards it. The spring drags across the hub annd wraps around it. This locks the gear/sppring/hub as one assembly causing the propshaft to spin. Denergizing the coil allows the spring to release the hub and the propshaft stops spinning. 2 wires, one from each coil come up from the gearcase. This why people say to get a manual. It will have drawings and pictures of this stuff, and as they say ' a picture is worth a thousand words.
