Reverse/Forward reversed

My son's boat (1986 50 hp Johnson) had its lower unit replaced. Now the forward and reverse are reversed. It runs fine except the shift lever conflicts with the upholstry and side wall of the boat, and can't get to full forward. (total running time under the problem is under ten minutes.) He's going to call the servicer ASAP, but I'm curious as to why and how, and could use the backup information as to causes when he talks to the guy who fixed it. Any ideas?

They may have switched the throttle and gear shift cables. The are the same, on the engine end.

DJ- Thanks. I'll look at it before I drag it in... how easy is it to switch them back?

Easy to do Nimsel. Disconnect both cables at the engine. Now move the control into forward gear. The cable that moves first is the shift cable.

With the control box and engine in neutral, adjust the thumb trunion at the motor so the barrel of the trunion fits in the retainer. Same with the throttle cable. Make sure the throttle arm is fully retarted against it's stop and make the same type of adjustment as on the throttle cable as on the shift cable.
