Hello All,

I have a 1974 Evinrude 70, Model# 70473-M, Ser.# J0003484. It has been in protected storage since about 1980 and was only used 3 summers (9Mo)and was fully operational when stored. The last time it was run, the fuel line was disconnected while running, which should have exhausted most of the fuel in the carbs. Hopefully, there will not be a lot of dried gunk in the carbs! I would like to get this motor running and use it. I have ordered a water pump rebuild kit and plan to rebuild the pump before attempting to start the engine. I am also planning to replace any hoses that may have deteriorated in the past 20 years and have purchased a new plastic gas tank with new hose and primer.

What else do I need to do before attempting to start the engine? Should I spray a oil/gas in the cylinders before cranking? Your replies are really appreciated!!!

Ed G. PA.

I would remove the spark plugs, and put a teaspoon of oil in each cylinder. Then rotate the engine flywheel a few times by hand to make sure nothing feels rough or is binding. Also, regrease all the zirks - the old grease will start binding up soon.
Go real easy on the engine for the first while while the internals get lubed up with fresh oil, and make sure it's running well before opening the throttle up (ie, from crud in the carbs).

I would pull the carbs and check them out, maybe just give them a slight cleaning, there's no telling what may have gotten in there in 24 years, even when you run the gas out of the bowls there is still residue that will cause some gum in there and maybe the jets. Those carbs are real simple and easy to pull off and put back on, it's a good idea to do it. Also check out the stats, you may want to just replace them, it's good insurance like the water pump. Good Luck.
