Re: 87 Johnson 110

The OMC manual says " Service thermostats while powerhead is removed", so technically the mechanic is right. But what owner is going to do this just because the thermo housing bolts are hard to get to? It can be done. Just takes some patience and time. Ther's been a lot of discussion on this particular job and a search on the topic will give you more info than you probably need.

Re: 87 Johnson 110

Thanks for the help I have removed the Thermostats and housing and found what appears to be alot of salt and crud in the housing. I am currently awaiting parts kit.
After seeing all the crud I believe I should replace the water pump impeller any Thoughts?. If so can anyone give me a quick lesson on replacing it nas how long should it take. I don't a have a shop manual but what I have read from this site you drop the lower unit by removing the five lower bolts( two and each side and one above the prop behind the trim tab). also you need to disconnect the shift linkage which is below the carb I haven' t found that yet.

Are there any new gaskests needed?
The model number is J110TLUR with a SS# of R7493105.

I will try anythng
The motor is new to me and and has sat for a couple of years. I was told that it has less than 200 total hours.

This site is great.

ND

No gasket between the leg and the lower unit.

Don't just replace the impeller, replace the whole kit and use a genuine OMC kit (dealer).

The shift linkage is under the lower carb. it is easier to access if the engine is in reverse.

I have a pair of those motors. If you have a lot of crud in the t-stat housing I would also pull the heads. Clean them and also get the crud around the water jackets in the block. Replace the deflectors in the block while you are at it. New head gaskets of course.

Re: 87 Johnson 110

Is there any way to get water flow through the block while I have the T-stat housing off. When I use the muffs will I get flow or does the pump have to be operating i.e. motor running?

You can drop the lower unit and connect a hose to the water pick-up tube to backflush.
