Powerband problem

I have a 1973 Johnson 50hp (50ESL73R) that has an issue with power. When I punch it, it balks and stalls (trying to pull the kids tubing). Then it finally stalled and when I went to start it, a buzzer went off in the controller (never heard that before). It hasn't worked right this year. It was rebuilt last year - worked fine, properly winterized.

Re: Powerband problem

Verify source of warning buzzer before using. I believe '73 only had overheat. Did rebuild include new water pump in lower end?

Re: Powerband problem

The buzzer is in the controller. I can't imagine that there is more than one (is that what you mean by the source) ?

No angus it didn't. The water pump looked good so we didn't replace. I've since heard about the overhead issue. Maybe winter was hard on the water pump.

I'm going to drop the leg tomorrow and see what's up. If it's not that - any other ideas ?

Re: Powerband problem

Always always always replace the water pump when rebuilding the engine. Its extremely important that a "tight" motor runs at the proper temp.

Just like the carb rebuild -- its part of rebuilding/replacing the powerhead.
