can a long shaft motor be converted to a short with just the removal of the spacer/ drive pieces in the drive column, or is it more complicated/ not doable at all?

Howdy, Oper2nyst.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Yes, it is doable. You need your engine model number to ensure the right parts.

You need the short driveshaft, shift linkage, water tube and on some models the leg.

Since conversions the other way are common, you might be able to swap parts with someone, or even swap engines.

Try the iboats Want Ads http://www.iboats.com/boats/marine--1/boating_want_ads--108 to find a swapper or someone who has what you need.

No luck there, try www.twincityoutboard.com

Good luck. :)
