I purchased a Jolly Roger boat with the engine in question on it.

The owner said the ign amplifier needs replaced. After extensive test I found this is so. So I replaced it and now the engine is running.

The question I have is: I noticed the amplifier I replaced looks new, but was deffinatly bad. What causes ign amplifiers to go bad? There has got to be something else that is causing this problem. I dont want to ruin a $300 part.

Thanks in advance for any comments you may have.

Re: 1970 Evinrude 85 hp ignition amplifier question

1) "Dirty" voltage. You want to avoid spikes in the 12V electrical power to the amp. Use a big, well-charged batter. Make sure all the connections are clean an tight. If your battery uses wingnuts, tighten them with a wrench.

2) Connecting the battery backwards (in polarity). This will also blow the fuse & rectifier.

3) (Guessing here) An ignition coil that sporadically goes open circuit. The amp needs to dump it's voltage.

I am in need of an ign amplifier for the same motor. Where did you buy that from. Thanks for your help.
