Well, I left my manual at my ranch about 300 miles away and now I need to replace the impellor. Can anyone out there tell me how to disengage the shift linkage so I can drop the unit? I removed a Phillips head screw with a "pin" end from the starboard side of the lower unit but it still won't drop. In the spring, I rebuilt the carb but this is the first time I have needed to work on the lower unit. What's the trick?

That phillips screw is a pivot point for the shift lever within the lower unit. If it still shifts properly, you lucked out. If not, then you'll no doubt need to dismantle the lower unit in order to install it properly.

With all the lower unit bolts out, put the shift lever in reverse. That will alllow the unit to drop down far enough so that you can remove one of the bolts from the shift connector that you'll see at the front portion of the lower unit.
