Does a cracked coil mean a bad coil?

All four of the coils on my 1976 115 hp johnson are cracked and some are leeking a black tar substance.Just wondering if its time to change them. The problem I am haveing is no power. It takes a long time to get out of the hole and only does about 30 mph. It just seams like I should have a better top speed and not be so slugish.

Re: Question about coils

Once the protective coating cracks, moisture enters and corrodes. Frequently the spark will find its way to ground thru a crack and spark there instead of at the sparkplug. If you have stuff oozing out, it needs to be replaced for sure. Any coil with a cracked shell should be replaced.

You will deninitely get spark leak out of a cracked coil. After a little time there will be no spark at the plug. Been there done that. Even tried epoxy in the crack. Just repalce them.
