HI there,
I have a 25 HP johnson Outboard ( seahorse ) built in 1977. I know there was no fire to one cylinder. I had the coils tested and they are good. One set of points is not in great shape. But even when I swap them out, I still am only getting fired on the same side only. Hence, bad points are the issue. I beleive its the magneto, as it looks like there are 2 outputs, and I am assuming one side of the outputs is damaged. Does anyone have a used "magneto?" and a set of points they can sell me ?

http://www.boatmotors.com/parts/ (new parts)

www.twincityoutboard.com (used parts)

There are two magnetos there, TSM. They share the magnets in the flywheel and the cam. That much is obviously good.

Points could be the problem, but more likely it is the condensor (capacitor) for that side.

You can put new points and condensors in both sides for a few bux. If you gotta pull the flywheel anyway, I recommend it.

Tell us the model number to confirm the year befored you buy anything.

Good luck. :)

I'd still suspect the coils...how were they tested?

There are 2 outpoint leads coming off the magneto, each goes to one set of points, which in turn goes to a coil.
One lead generates nothing, one generates power, points work, coil works, spark is deep blue.
If i change the leads then the other set of points work, the other coil works, and there is a deep blue spark.
Seems to me like the one dead lead here is my issue.
Anyone?

just to clarify
in your test both coils produced spark, both sets of points trigered spark, but only one at a time.

What other wiring is hooked to them, sounds like a short in external wiring possably in an over rpm or kill circut. Use an ohm meter with the external wiring disconected from the points and test between the wire and ground. If it has a low reading on say a 1000 ohm scale look at the rest of the system. If you try to run it with kill switch or over rpm disconected you would have to choke it to death, I mean choke it to kill it. (though this is newer than I work with)
