Early 80s Evinrude-Not Winterized-Help

Hi.<br /><br />I've inherited an early 80's 140Hp Evinrude on an 18ft Starcraft. I've got the engine running (thanks again guys!) but it's running poorly.<br /><br />Stalls frequently, LOTS of white smoke, responds slowly to changes in the idle lever.<br /><br />I'm 99.9% free of all knowledge of engines. Can you help me with some advice on how to go about "cleaning out" the engine? <br /><br />I know I'm going to have to let it run quite a bit, but on top of this, are there things I should be doing and/or cleaning and or changing and/or lubing that will help the engine run better?<br /><br />Oh, FYI, the boat is not in the water. I'm working on it with the hose/earmuff thingee. <br /><br />Thanks in advance guys.
