I just bought a boat with a '77 85hp evinrude it seems to run great but I have to use starter fluid almost everytime I start it. After its been running for a little while it will start again with out starter fluid but not always. I know next to nothing about boat engines. this is my first boat. thanks

Starter fluid iz real bad juju for two stroke engines. It doesn't have any lubricant in it and when ya use it, it washes all the oil off the moving parts in the engine. Evil stuff. Sounds like the reason your engine iz hard to start is it isn't getting enough initial fuel charge. Pump up the priming bulb good and tight lift the warm-up lever and choke the snot out of it. Each individual outboard has a little bit different starting procedure that it likes. You'll just have to figure yours out.

g'luck & c/6
Hooty

Starter fluid is bad juju for any motor. Ether is an explosive gas. Its like putting nitro-methane in your motor.
