I just replaced the stator due to a cracked wire end-engine started fine then wouldnt start and backfires when cranking- suspect the points-anyone have any ideas and what is the point setting as it has two sets.

Check whether the flywheel slipped off the key. It's common. The surfaces need to be dry (use acetone to remove any oil) and the torque needs to be all the way to spec.

I think those points set at 0.020 each set at it widest open point.
