I'm looking at a 75hp Mer. 2001 model. The owner says it has 120 hours on it and has not had any repairs to it and that it is in perfect condition. The motor appears to be extremely clean from photos. I would need to travel to NY to look at it. Does this seem like it's too good of a deal. Another question even if it is a great deal on a great motor. Would this be a wise decision for me to buy. I currently have a 69 Merc. 80hp for my 16' Silverline. The engine runs fine and I need to do a few things on it. I'm not sure if I'll hold on to the boat for many years before moving up. Would I be a fool to buy down to a 75hp engine? Should I just save the grand and wait for my next boat? With my luck, if I decide not to buy it, my 69 will need exactly 900 dollars worth of repairs come the spring. Thanks for any input!

a 2001 model will definatly increase the value of the boat if you plan to sell it! and if the motor checks out ok it would be a awesome price, almost sounds too good to be true! i say, if the motor you have now is needing $900 worth of work, you'd be better off getting the 2001 for $1000. but if its the boat that needs $900 in repairs, i wouldnt bother with the 2001, unless you just want to make money on reselling the 2001.

$900.00

I wish we could find deals like that up here in Canada.

It would seem that some of the people in the US just give stuff away. :(

TMD

My problem is that the boat isn't worth that much. It's a 76 Silverline. It's in good shapre for the year and the entire interior has been redone. Hull is in very good shape. Not a spot of rot. The only repair I see in the forseeable future on the 69 Merc. is the replacement of whatever seals are leaking in my lower unit. It runs great all the way up to 5K rpm. Maybe I'll but this motor and try to resell it.

Would I notice any great change of performance going from a 80ho 69 Merc. to a 75hp 01 Merc? The 96 has a three blade aluminum and the 01 has a 4 blade SS

Re: 2001 Mercury 75hp for $900

OK, here's what I'm doing. The money is going into escrow at his bank. The motor is being shipped to me for 150 dollars. I have 5 days to get it looked at. My shop advises thaey'll charge app. 75 dollars to do this. If I'm not satisfied with the motor, back it goes. Around a grand for a clean 01' 75hp Merc. Owner claims it has 120 hours on the clock. Will this engine power my 16' boat the same as my 69' 80hp Merc? I think I may be getting a pretty good deal here and hopefully the shop will catch anything, if anything, that is trying to be masked from my knowledge. Any advice that I might use would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a good deal. Make sure your wrench goes over that thing top to bottom and back again. Your performance will most likely exceed that of your old Merc. Good luck!

Thank you gentlemen, I will keep you updated once it has been inspected. Does anyone know what the approximate cost is to have the motor mounted and the controls set-up?
