hard shifting

I have an 85 235 hp. Just got the boat and motor this week. I was checking the controls and it's really hard shifting back and forth. I disconnected the cables and they work fine. When I try to change gears on the motor with the cables off it's really hard. There's a grease fitting there but it only took less than 2 squirts with the grease gun. Any ideas?

Before we get too far -- is the motor running when youre trying to shift it?

Have someone turn the prop when you try shifting and see if it goes any easier. Make sure the key is turned off.

Re: hard shifting

Never try to shift it without it running or turning the propshaft. Something in the control box may suffer.
