Just a minor question, I think. What's a general guide on when a motor should achieve plane?

My boat planes fine anywhere from 80% of throttle to WOT. Is that normal, or should a boat be able to plane before the 80% mark?

Thanks guys,
Eric

depends on how heavy your boat is and how big your motor is, if your boat is light and plenty of horse it will jump up at low rpm. Hope this helps.

Three boat owners down here in NZ agree that we work on the 75% to get up leaving 25% for extras.
Remember that once on the plane you can throttle down and stay there for about 10% less throttle.
Ross

It has more to do with hull design and set up than anything. Some large boats are made to plane easily with little horsepower. Those type hulls usually give up some top end to achieve that.
