i have a few question's i hope can get answered i have a 1989 evin rude 60hp mod #e6otlcea.and i think the fuel pump might be bad because i have a hard time starting it and when i get it to run for 40 sec it die's out and why it is running in that little time a lot of white smoke come out like it is burning more oil then gas.i squeeze the primer ball to it get hard and when the motor runs for about 40 sec it die's could that be a fuel pump problem it sound like it's dieing for gas.

Can you keep the engine running by continuing to pump the primer ball?If so ,your pump may be the culprit.

Don't ever use starting fluid on a two stroke outboard. It can easily blow a hole in a piston. Not real clear on your response ,but if you can keep it running by pumping the primer bulb, and it will die otherwise, you most likely have a failing fuel pump.Bare in mind ,that these fuel pumps are crankcase pulse driven units that use a rubber hose to drive the diaphragm and if the hose is leaking or disconnected the pump won't work.If the fuel pump is the original vro pump, a new one will put you back around $200.

Then I would suspect that the carburetors may be fouled. They will need to be dismantled one at a time to clean any gummy restrictions that may be blocking any of the fixed orifices. It doesn't take much.Get yourself an engine manual and it will walk you through the steps.

Did this engine set out of use for a spell?

A compression test would also be a good idea. All three cylinders should read at least 100 and be within 10% to be a healthy engine.

would u be able to tell if the carbs were flooded by looking at them when they were still one the motor and one more thing the motor sounds like it starving for fuel.
