Recently purchased a 1978 13' Whaler from a friend. It has a 28 SPL Evinrude on it but there is no identification plate on it and no evidence there ever was. On the top of the starboard side of the transom bracket are etched the following: 29GN1 and, on another line just below it 186355. Also on the starboard side of the engine, toward the rear, on what looks like an aluminum freeze out plug is R816749. What does this mean? It is supposed to be a 1992. I would like to know what I have. It runs fine in a tank but wouldn't rev up on the water. I would like to get an owners manual, etc.

Re: Model and serial number

I'm new at this ....but maybe it'll help
we had the same prob earlier this week on an old outboard, no plate, no model etc. Eventually we found the model # on the drive shaft. (by the way it turned out to be a series of 9 characters... 8 alpha and 1 numeric)

good luck..

R816749 could be the serial number or part number. Cannot tell from that. If it is over a 1980, the model number will look something like this: E28ESLENB with EN being the designation for a 1992 Model.

Re: Model and serial number

I am new at this too. Thanks for the info. You had to take the engine apart to get to the drive shaft, right?
