sonnyd, correct adjustment is so that the linkage returns HARD against the idle srew after being BOTH in forward full speed and reverse full speed.

I use a piece of paper,usually a dollar bill,(handy) between the screw and the block to make sure there is no space.Adjust the trunion (thumb wheel) until this happens.You don't have to run the engine to do this,just hand spin the prop if things are binding (or stiff).

What concerns me is when you pulled off the silencer back plate.Some years have a fuel enrichment valve bolted there.If yours does,you may have disturbed the lines to it,or pinched them during reassembly.

This valve 'squirts' fuel into the intake when cranking and pushing in the key to start.It is your choke.

No choke.... hard start.
