Have a '79 60HP Johnson. Run good as far as I can tell--hits right RPM, idles well, etc. I have had no experience with decarbonizing a motor. What will this procedure do for the motor? I don't mean the big cloud of smoke I've heard about. I mean what is the purpose of decarbonizing? Will it improve performance?

Gracias.

Re: Decarbonizing old johnson

The purpose of decarbonizing is to create a large foul smelling cloud of smoke to irritate the neighbors......:-D....

Naw....not really. The purpose of a decarb is to remove any carbon that may be built up in the cylinders, mainly around the piston rings. Carbon on piston rings will make the rings stick. If they stick, you get blow by and eventually a wiped cylinder wall or scoring. You may not see a improvment in performance, but the engine will last longer. As with any mechanical device, it's longevity depends on the care it gets.

Yup - I never did the decarbonizing. Damn Johnson ate a ring. After 5 years.

Do it.
