I have a 1977 85 HP Evinrude, the manual says to remove the pin in a V4, the only pin I can see is connected to the linkage and their is 3 parts to this, It looks like I have to remove a small bolt on top of the rod. The second question is a biggie, as we were running the boat it stalled down to 30mph and then jumped to 40 mph it ran good, stoped the boat to fish and I could not start the engine, it almost seamed like the drive shaft or lower unit was locked, it would turn over for 3/4 turn and stop, If we took out a spark plug it would turn over, docked the boat and tried to turn it over and a loud snap or grinding sound came from the lower unit, any sugestions on what this is.

Re: Drop Lower unit 77

Pull the lower unit and see what's going on in there. Some have a pin you pull to release the shift linkage, some have a bolt up by the carb that needs to come out. Some you remove the water pick-up screen to access the bolt. Others have a small plate on the LU you remove to get to it. Not sure on yours and right now I don't really have the time to look it up, as work calls. Others will know..
