1956 evinrude prop?

I took my boat out the other day and it would run out ok until about half throttle and then it sounded like the motor was freewheeling and it was not under any load. I checked the pin in the prop and it was ok.

I grabbed hold of the prop with the motor off and tried to turn it and it will turn without turning the motor over.

I took the prop off and looked at it. The prop has a bronze center hub with some prehistoric smelly tarish rubber around it which fits inside the prop. The rubber looks very deteriorated.

I was wondering if there was a fix for this. I was thinking of putting a keyway in it or a pin through it. I have the pin type drive, so if I hit something would it shear the pin before it damaged the shaft without having the rubber to dampen the shock?

Thanks for any advice

A propshop should be able to rebush it for you.
