Hello,
my 1993 evinrude will not start. I first thought it was the starter cellonoid because I could jump across the cellonoid and the starter would fire. However, after replacing the cellonoid, the starter still will not fire. I have juice to the cellonoid, and the warning horn works when the key is turned on as well as the key activated choke. The 20 amp main fuse is good. I have checked the ground and connections and every thing seems to be clean and tight. I bypassed the lanyard saftey switch but that did not help. The motor was running fine, all I did was shut down and troll for a while. Went to fire back up and nothing.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Bob
Townsend, DE

Re: help with 40hp evinrude

Hey Bob and welcome to iboats.

If the starter still will not crank with the replacement solenoid and if you can jump the solenoid and the starter cranks, take a look at the start in neutral switch in the control box. It's possible the connection there is bad or the switch itself may be bad.

Did you measure for 12V at the solenoid small terimial with the key to the start position? The wire is a yellow/red stripe (?) to this terminal.

Thanks for the reply OBJ. O volts at the small terminal. Is the control box also the shift selector? (must be the neutral switch) Hope so cause the sun is shining and I want to go fishing.

thanks again
Bob

Re: help with 40hp evinrude

Doesnt seem to be the neutral switch cause I found it and bypassed it and nothing. also, there seems to be juice passing through it when tested with key turned to start. so, I dont know if it could be in the ignition switch (key area) but then againg why would it send juice through the neutral switch when turned to start. any way of trouble shoothing the key switch?
