skegsaver vs. getting skeg welded

i have an old 100hp johnson , the skeg has been broken off , it has been filed down ...my question is will a skeg saver work like a skeg has been welded on or are they made to fit over an old skeg ....2nd question since this is going on a fishing boat and dont plan on cutting real hard do i even need a skeg ????? what would you do ???????

Hi, Skibot.<br /><br />The function of the skeg is to protect your prop. It has little effect on steering.<br /><br />I prefer a SkegGard to a welded repair. It will fit as long as there is enough of the skeg left to hold the 2 bolts.<br /><br />A SkegGard cost about the same as a good welding job; either is a lot less than a new prop.<br /><br />Good luck. :)
