I am having a strange problem with this motor. If I get it out on the lake and open it up it lasts about 5 to 10 minutes and it dies.

I set up a barrel at home and put the motor in it and it dies after about 10 minutes of being in neutral at around 4500 RPMs.

It doesnt sputter before it dies, its like you turned the key off.

Someone suggested a new battery and I put a brand new 115 amp hour battery in it and that is the only thing on it.

The squeeze ball on the fuel line has gas in it when it dies and if I let it sit for a while it will start back up again.

If I let it sit for an hour or so, it will last another 5 or 10 minutes. If I only let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes it will go a few feet and die if it even starts at all. Usually it will want to start but then just kill.

To me it seems heat related like it is getting hot and there is some sort of thermal sensor that is shutting the motor down.

Any ideas?

After she dies, you may pull the cowl and touch the power head to see if she is real hot. If it is to hot to touch it may be heat related. I would caution you on running her at 4500rpm with no load for that period of time in the barrel.
If the motor is running cool, I would consider a firing check at a dealer. I don't think it is fuel related.
LW

Hi, Mike.

Welcome to iboats. :)

You either have an unvented fuel tank that gets a vacuum lock after you draw enough fuel, or. . .

More likely, you have an ignition component that is failing when hot and starts working again when it cools down.

Never run a two stroke at 4500rpm with no load on it. There is a very big risk of thermal runaway and engine destruction.

Take the bonnet off and crank her up in the barrel. Leave her at idle and put a hair dryer or hot air gun on the ignition parts, one at a time, long enough to get it hot. If you get a failure that way you have just heated the failing part.

Good luck, and let us know what you find. :)

The fuel tank is an inboard fuel tank and I overfilled it last week and it spewed out the vent on the side of the boat so I assume the vent is working fine.

Which ignition parts should I check?

I posted an image on my website with arrows pointing to the parts I think I should hit with the hair dryer. Are there any others I should try?

http://www.mcarlson.net/files/evinrude.jpg

Well I tried the blow dryer trick and I couldnt get it to fail any earlier. I let it idle in neutral and it lasted about 10 minutes and died.

While it was idling I did notice that water was coming out the exhaust port and it started to blow alot of smoke/steam. I also heard waht sounded like water boiling in the lower end. I wasn't sure if that was water draining back into the barrel from the motor or if it was actually boiling something.

I have a video of it here:

http://www.mcarlson.net/files/motor.wmv

Is that normal? Forgive my newbiness, but I dont have much experience with outboard motors. I have been wrenching on cars and snowmobiles for quite a while but this is my first outboard I have owned.
