Oil is getting into the gas feed line at the engine end. The motor has not been run in approx. 1 year. There is oil in the fuel filter on the motor and in the filter I installed in the fuel line before the motor. Whats happening? Is it damaging the motor? Any input is appreciated.

you might want to check your fuel pump. The impulse line is connected to the block which has oil in the crank case and may be coming from there. You may want to get a rebuild kit for your fuel pump.

SLR1 Well first off no the oil in the fuel line won't hurt anything. If your still using the VRO and it hasn't ever been replace since 1986 thank god and do a dance. Then disconnect that thing and start mixing your own oil gas mix! It really sounds that the diaphragm in the VRO pump has failed. Before running the engine again I would mix 50:1 fuel mix and run the engine this will prevent any dammage if the pump is bad. I suspect it won't start at all do to the amount of oil its going to pump! The engine will be smart enought to know you have mix in the tank and only add oil as needed if all is well. But should the motor not run, you will need to see if its getting too much oil. I have seen this happen quite often. Pull the plugs and check it out. Then use the search feature on the board and check out disconnecting the VRO. This info will let you still use your current set up as just a fuel pump and you will have to mix your gas. The reasons are as follows the VRO pump should be replace every 6 years or so I don't believe there is a kit for rebuilding that half of the pump! The cost is several hundred dollars for a new one! You could find a new used one off the many taken off other motors but you won't know how old they are! VRO,s came out in 1984 and they either worked well or not at all for there first few years. they became more reliable about 1990. Most have elected to disconnect them. When ever I have a older motor that has a VRO pump the first thing I do is disconnect it, then I start trouble shooting.
steve

SLR1

The oilfeed thing often occurs when motor has sat unused during the winther and spring and temperature changes. The half-empty tank will pressurefeed pump and motor and fill carbureators and sometimes fuellines with oil. This doesnt have to mean pump is faulty though, but capvent doesnt always work. There is a lot of mistaking around failures vro has or hasnt caused. Replacing a 1986 pump is a good idea, stinky2 is right there. Pump isnt smart enough to know if your fuel is oilmixed - it will mix water, or air, if no oil present in tank.
