I have a 1973 50 hp johnson model #50ESL73. Inconsistantant compression. So we tore it apart. Found it needed rings. Have checked Hi and Low on the web can't find a listing for that year/engine size from anybody.I even called sierra on the phone. No luck. My local dealer said he'd be happy to charge me $50 a set to order them, which is more than twice the online price for comparable ring sets. It looks like I have no choice. Now heres the real problem. When I asked him to confirm the bore diameter he said he doesn't know. So before I "special order" a $100 worth of rings I can't return, I thought I should consult with the experts. Heres the numbers--- bore dia. 3.090, Piston Dia. at the skirt 3.087 on the top of pistons it's stamped 030. Were pretty sure that means both cyl. have been bored 30 over. That would make the original bore dia. 3.060. Does this sound right? Any help would be appreciated.

Shishka....if the pistons have .030 stamped on them, then the engine has been bored out .030 over. The rings by my books go for about $38 a set American money from Bombardier.

EDIT: Try the link below for what ya' need.

http://www.twincityoutboards.com/

OBJ thanks for the reply.
After re-reading my post I noticed that my actual "question" wasn't very clear. I'll try it this way. Does anyone know the original std. bore dia. for a '73 50hp johnson model # 50ESL73. The reason I'm asking is, after numerous searches and phone calls I haven't been able to confirm that 3.060 was a bore dia. ever used by OMC. If there's one thing I've learned after 2 months with this motor it's, don't assume anything!
