did I damage a head or piston?

1970 Johnson 115hp
---------------------------------------
Had the heads off. Lots of carbon build-up. My "Seloc" manual showed using a wire brush on the end of drill to clean off the carbon, so I used a fine "cup" style brush after spraying some Deep Creep on the ports and piston tops. Got the carbon off great but I notice the brush was starting to remove some metal material so I stopped. Questions: how much damage could I have done? Will a compression check let me know if all is well (heads are back on but I'm waiting on a water pump).

thanks in advance,
Dan

Re: did I damage a head or piston?

Youre probably (most likely) OK depending on how much is "some" material.

The decarbs work great -- especially if you follow instructions. ;) You got the heads on, you can run the motor by putting a hose on the water tube. Then spray the decarb in the carbs after the motor comes up to temp. It'll clean all 4 in no time. A bit less messy too I would think.

Good luck!
