My spark plugs keeping fouling with oil/gas on my 76' 35 hp Johnson that I just bought. I am mixing 50:1, I took the carberator apart and cleaned it. It will run for about 10 minutes then die if I try to idle it down. I can't restart it and when I pull the plugs they are covered with oil and gas. I have the idle at 1.25 turns from seated position and it seems to need choked a lot to get it started to begin with. Then if I clean the plugs, it will start again for a while until it gets fouled. I know the plugs aren't quite as "hot" as they should be, but would the correct plugs, keep it from fouling or is it a carberator problem. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Spark Plug Fouling Problem

for a $3-4 investment I would try the proper plugs. Your on the right path you identified a problem, now fix it and see if it works (That s part of the trouble shooting process) I run my motor at about 36:1 just to be safe. I also have the idle adjustment screw on the top of the carb turned out about 3 full turns.
