I have a 1989 Johnson 175hp. I have rebuilt the engine twice due to sticking rings. I am a maintaince nut, using "Ringfree". My question is one of prop selection. I can't reach rated RPM and feel the engine is lugging on my 21 Mako that's built like a tank. Could this be causing the carbon/sticking?
Thanks For the Help!!

Re: Johnson Sticking Rings

From what I have learned on this forum you motor should be capable of turning 5800 rpm with an avrage load. Not being to reach this rpm will cause the motor to lug and carbon up under the rings. Then the will catch in the ports and break.
Search this forum for post by Dhadley he is very knowledgeable on this subject. His member number is 685. Search for 5800 rpm.

Start by posting your rpm at WOT & what prop you have on it now.
