Can't disconnect shifter linkage on a "87" 25 HP Johnson

Does anyone know how to disconnect the shifting linkage on a 25 johnson? I need to replace the water pump. I checked the other posts, but couldn't find a solution. There is no two piece linkage in the lower unit, no cover near the top to get at the shifter or bolt under the carburetor. Do I need to remove the powerhead or do I need to pull the shifting rod and handle out from the side of the motor.

On my 20,I have to remove the water intake screen(where the muffs go) on the lower unit to access the rod.Not sure if it pertains to your motor though.

Thanks guys for the quick reply. I found it! (The only place I didn't look) I bought a like new 87 Service Manual for 9.9 to 35 Johnsons on Ebay today, but it won't get here soon enough. I am heading up to Canada for some serious fishing next weekend.
