A brush wire has broken on my Bosch starter for 1981 60 hp johnson. I have soldered it and seems to be working, but am planning to re-brush it just to be safe. Question is do I spray out the interior with electrical cleaner, or is it supposed to be lubricated in some fashion?

Re: starter rebuild

Hi ya' blueboy and welcome to the forums.

Go ahead and hose her out. Won't hurt. And while you got it apart, clean up the commutator. That's the part the brushes ride on. Chuck the armature up in a drill and use crocuse (sp) cloth on a popsicle stick to polish up the surface. Clean the slots out with a knife and follow up with eletrical cleaner. This will insure good contacts with the new brushes.

Use an electrical type lube on the bearins (they are bushings).

Lightly lube the bendix shaft also.

Keep us posted if ya' need any help.

Re: starter rebuild

I am getting the brush kit from the local OMC dealer. Here in British Columbia, it is $28 Can.
