I'm in the process of letting go of a '79 johnson 9.9.

How are the new Johnson's, compared to my vintage? Also, what brands should I be looking at for a replacement?

Do most outboards come with electric start?

Many thanks!

we will let you know in 20 years.
brand preference now a days really matters more to how much of the work and maintence youll do yourself.. most guys try to find the motor with the closest dealer support and easiest to find parts.

i.e, tohatsu makes an excellent motor, i have 3 of them, but finding parts is harder than finding a 37 year old virgin

its up to how youll use it and what you need it to do, they are all about the same weight, and not all of them come with electric start, although most have it as an option

The new Johnsons, manufactured by Bombardier now, are built with the same quality as the ones from the "good old days". They just have to get past the bad rep. they got when the remaining OMC employees were building them with pink slips in hand.....

Here's a quick read for you....

http://www.maxrules.com/fixbombtrip.html

I think the new ones are even better.

The old ones were great engines, but Bombardier is using modern computerized manufacturing (better tolerances and better consistency) and modern quality control systems.

No worries about a new Johnny.

You can have it with or without electric start.

Good luck. :)

OOOOPS!!

Bombardier started building them in 2001, Deacon. '99 was one of the years Luna Sea referred to.

We all thought that you meant NEW new.

Good luck. :)

JB, speaking of new motors, I was at my OMC dealer/parts house. On a rack was a good looking 25 hp rude 2 stroke. I don't know how new it was but wasn't used. Next to it was a better looking Johnson, a little bigger in physical size. Figured it to be a 35 hp. Went to look at the front and it was only a 9.9 4 stroke. That thing was twice the size of my 73 9.5. I guess this is going to be the norm. as they phase out 2 strokes?

It, actually, is a new, 9.9 from '99. Never used. The outfit that I bought it from bought 5 in 2000 in an effort to get more sailing customers.

They still had this one 9.9 left in 2004, and still no sailing customers. I grabbed it for its two stroke power and size and electric start. Hopefully it's a true diamond in the rough ...
