I just dug out my dad's super old johnson outboard. I can't see any model #'s but it does say fastwin and 18 on it. Has a plastic sorta sleek lookin cover on the top. Further info I would like is suggestions on how to get it running again. thanx

Take a compression test to make sure it's worth fixing up first. If you get better than 90psi, and no more than a 10% variation between the cyls, it's definetly worth fixing up. No sense beating a dead horse.
But if you do get low compression, check back here because there are some simple things you can do to repair low compression that sometimes work. For example decarbing it.
The model number should be on the nameplate, which is normally attached to the transom clamp. If not, check out the silver plug on the engine block itself, near the spark-plug end.
Report back with the numbers you find, and we'll try to date it. Then you can get yourself the appropriate service manual and start working on it. A service manual is manditory, and is the best thing you can buy for any engine.

You can also try to get a visual ID by checking out the catalogs at Old OMC Site
18hps were made between '57 and '73. The fiberglass tops came out in '59.

ok I finally got around to getting some numbers and getting back on the computer. I didn't find any model numbers where you suggested they might be. I did, however, find a number on a washer thingy on the top of what I think is a generator. It's a cylindrical part with wires that run strait to the spark plugs. Here's the number...
f-1900-m-c if my memory serves me correctly. thanx again.
Nik

That sounds like the flywheel your describing. It's the part on the very top that spins when the engine is running. Normally there isn't a model number on there, but if that happens to be FD-19(DL) (OMC) on there than it's a '65 18hp:
FD(E)-11 - 1957
FD(E)-12 - 1958
FD-13 - 1959
FD-14 - 1960
FD-15 - 1961
FD-16 - 1962
FD-17 - 1963
FD-18 - 1964
FD-19DL - 1965
FD(L)-20 - 1966
FD(L)-21 - 1967
FD(L)-22 - 1968
(No more Johnson 18hps after this)
Good luck with it!

thanx again Paul. how do you know all this? so it just so happens that one of the only things I can identify on an outboard motor is the flywheel and the number was not on it. regardless, I'll print out this list of #'s and go look for em on my motor. if I can't find one that matches I'll just cut to the chase and take the dern thing to a local marine shop.

No probelm. If you're looking for information on 50's-70's OMC outboards, one of the best resources is The Old OMC Site. You might try looking at the catalogs there to try to match yours visually.

EDIT: Ha! Looks like I'm repeating myself... :)

I don't recall Johnson ever using the "Fastwin" name. I think that was an Evinrude-only model designation. On the other hand, the Evinrude cover fits the same year Johnson.

Except for paint and a few minor details (like name) it would be identical to a same year Johnson (maybe the FD series Johnson).

It is very important that you find out the year, Alex. If it is a 1963 or earlier it needs a 24:1 fuel mix. 1964 and later engines use a 50:1 mix.

Good luck. :)
